MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI or MR) is a safe and comfortable medical imaging procedure available in any of our five Southwest X-Ray locations. An MRI can make a virtual image of any part of the body, such as the spine, brain, internal organs, muscle groups, tendons, ligaments, bones, central nervous system, and flowing blood detecting possible areas of particular attention.

If you believe you may suffer from any of these conditions, an MRI can be performed to help diagnose the following:

  • Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis (MS)
  • Brain Tumors Diagnosis
  • Diagnosis of Strokes in their earliest stages
  • Diagnosis of Infections in Brain, Spine, Abdomen or Joints
  • Tendonitis Diagnosis
  • Visuals of Torn Ligaments in the Wrist, Knee and Ankle, Shoulder, and Elbow
  • Evaluation of Masses in soft tissues of Body, Abdomen, or Pelvis
  • Evaluation of Bone Tumors, Cysts and Bulging or Herniated Discs in the Spine
  • Evaluation of Arteries and Veins throughout the body

Most Advanced and Unique Technology in the Region
Oasis 1.2 Tesla Open MRI system sets a high standard for patient-centric care and it’s the only one of its kind in El Paso. A unique achievement in high-performance imaging, the truly open architecture of the Oasis features high magnet uniformity, Zenith RF Technology and advanced imaging capabilities to achieve high output diagnostic performance.

The Oasis Open MRI provides clinical capabilities that rival those of many high-field closed type systems.

  • A comfortable patient experience-patients can see all around.
  • Fast scans and RADAR motion compensation to minimize patients’ study time.
  • 650 lbs. Table weight capacity.

How an MRI Works
An MRI is the best way to see inside the human body. The human body is mostly water and since water molecules contain hydrogen nuclei (protons), which become aligned with a magnetic field, an MRI scanner applies a very strong magnetic resonance to generate visuals from the tissue sending the information to a computer.

During the MRI, comfort and care is our priority. Take advantage of our advanced technology and feel completely comfortable when you get an MRI. At your visit, you will lie on a movable bed. Then, the bed enters a strong magnetic field and radio waves are applied quickly in a different direction. This sudden procedure shift causes certain atoms in the body to behave differently. This is when the MRI scans the information and sends it to the computer.
Before your MRI exam, remove all accessories including hairpins, jewelry, eyeglasses, hearing aids, wigs, and dentures. During the exam, these metal objects may interfere with the magnetic field, affecting the quality of the MRI images taken.

Therefore, in preparation for your exam, notify your technologist if you have:

  • Any prosthetic joints – hip, knee.
  • A heart pacemaker (or artificial heart valve), defibrillator or stent.
  • An intrauterine device (IUD).
  • Any metal plates, pins, screws, or surgical staples in your body.
  • Tattoos and permanent make-up.
  • A bullet or shrapnel in your body or ever worked with metal.
  • If you are pregnant or suspect you may be pregnant.
